Congratulations to artist Jenna Derrenbacker, our latest Instagram winner! Jenna is a full time mixed media artist based in Stuart, FL who creates space, ocean and memorial resin art ranging from small jewelry dishes to large wall hangings: "I spend every day (often weekends, too) in my studio working on new pieces. Sometimes, a piece can take weeks to complete, with up to 10 layers of resin. Whether it is ocean art, space art, or memorial art, the process is different for each."
Describe the type of art you create.
What’s your art background? Are you self taught or did you study art?
"I’ve always been artist but have never taken any lessons or classes. I taught myself how to create with resin in 2020, and have taught myself how to work with other mediums since then."
Does where you’re from or where you currently live influence your work?
"I’ve lived my whole life in the cutest little beach town, so I’d say it’s definitely influenced a lot of my ocean artwork."
Why do you want to make art? What motivates you to create?
"I have always been a very creative person, and am often inspired by what I see around me. Once I get an idea in my head, I can’t unsee it until I’m in the studio creating it - and I get new ideas all. the. time. Sometimes it takes everything in me to not push aside current projects just to start new ones!"
What do you love about the mediums that you use?
"I love that resin is such a fluid medium that is sometimes unpredictable. I love experiencing “happy accidents” that turn into tried and true techniques later on! I also love working with reclaimed and recycled wood substrates because it comes with its own history. I feel like it adds a great deal of depth to my work."
When did you discover resin? How has resin impacted your artwork?
"I discovered resin in June of 2020. My art business really took off when I started working with resin, and it is the main medium of every single piece I create. Without resin, I wouldn’t have a business!"
Does art help you in other areas of your life?
"Creating allows me to slow down and focus only on what I’m creating in the moment. It helps me stay present in my day to day life."
What do you hope someone sees or feels when they look at your art?
"I hope someone looking at my artwork feels inspired and touched by the depth of the piece."
How do you define success as an artist? What does success look and feel like for you?
"The definition of success greatly varies from person to person. For me, it means to be truly and deeply happy. Social media is great, but I don’t necessarily want a certain number of followers to call myself successful. I have a group of clients that wholeheartedly support me and are invested in my growth as an artist, and that is one of the most important things to me. Sometimes, my clients send me videos of them opening up a memorial piece, which is a very emotional process. Watching those videos and knowing how deeply I impacted someone’s life makes me feel extremely humbled but also very successful."
