@fara.thomas.art Is Our Instagram Winner!

Congratulations to artist Fara Thomas, our latest Instagram winner! Based in Las Vegas, NV, Fara is a contemporary artist who creates multidimensional resin artwork: "I want to make art because it allows me to express my thoughts and emotions in a way that transcends words. The process of creating is incredibly fulfilling; it’s a form of exploration and self-discovery."

Does where you're from or where you currently live influence your work?

My paintings are largely inspired by my education in the West, and my roots and traditions in the East, and the contradictions at play between the two. Being raised in Iran which has one of the oldest, richest and most influential art heritages in the world, my work chronicles the conversation between tradition and modernity, and I attempt to put forward the idea of modernism and color as a globally interconnected phenomenon. I attempt to compare Iranian and Western critical theory, finding that both similarly test the boundaries of language of color. Thinking of the bazaar in Iran full of texture and color.

What's your art background?  Are you self-taught or did you study art?

Studied Art history, but in regards to resin artwork I am Self-taught.

Are you a full-time artist or do you create around work hours?

Almost a full-time artist.

What do you love about the mediums that you use in your work?

The distinct features, skills, and storytelling opportunities presented by each medium are fascinating. I am particularly drawn to resin for its transparency, luminosity, and its delicate quality. Each medium challenges me to think creatively and adapt my approach, keeping the process exciting and dynamic. Ultimately, they all help convey my emotions and stories, making the art feel alive and engaging.

How did you discover resin?

As a traditional artist, I was captivated by how gloss varnish enhanced my artwork, inspiring me to explore resin for its vibrant luminosity.

How has resin impacted your artwork?

Resin has profoundly transformed my artwork! Its luminous quality adds depth and vibrancy that I couldn’t achieve with traditional methods. I love how it enhances colors and creates a glossy finish, making my pieces feel more dynamic and
alive. The versatility of resin also allows me to experiment with texture and layering, unlocking new creative possibilities.

Can you provide a brief rundown of your process?

There's not much to it. I mix the pigments with resin and apply one layer at a time. I start without a clear beginning or end in mind, painting instinctively. I don’t know where I’m headed before I begin. This organic, spontaneous approach feels more natural to me than pre-planning every step. I try not to focus too much on the outcome; each emerging shape and color responds to the last.

What motivates you to create?

I’m motivated by the desire to connect with others, to evoke feelings, and to inspire reflection. Whether it’s the challenge of mastering a new technique or the joy of seeing my vision come to life, each step in the artistic journey drives me to keep creating.

Does art help you in other areas of your life?

Absolutely! Art plays a vital role in many aspects of  my life. It provides a creative outlet for stress relief, helping me unwind and recharge. The discipline and focus I cultivate through my artistic practice have sharpened my problem-solving skills and attention to detail in other areas. Moreover, engaging with art has improved my ability to communicate and connect with others, fostering meaningful relationships and collaborations. Overall, art enriches my life, making me more resilient and adaptable in various situations.

What do you hope someone sees or feels when they look at your art?

My work revolves around color, which speaks its own language. When viewers encounter my art, I hope they feel a sense of connection and wonder. I want them to experience the emotions and stories woven into each piece, igniting their imagination and encouraging reflection on their own feelings and experiences. Whether it evokes joy, nostalgia, or contemplation, my goal is for my art to resonate personally, creating a space for deep engagement and personal interpretation.

How do you define success as an artist? What does that look and feel like for you?

I define success as an artist by the impact my work has on others and the fulfillment I derive from the creative process. It involves continually evolving, pushing my boundaries, and remaining true to my vision. Success feels like joy and satisfaction in the act of creation, along with the connections I forge with my audience. It’s not just about recognition or sales; it’s knowing that my art resonates with people and inspires them in meaningful ways. When I see others engaged
with my work, that sense of fulfillment is what truly defines my success.

What's your favorite resin tip you'd like to share with our readers?

Mix well and be gentle with that flame.

Where do you sell your work?

I am represented by a few galleries and have exhibited at art shows internationally.
