@joelleartist Is Our Instagram Winner!

Congratulations to artist Joëlle Blouin, our latest Instagram winner! Originally from Québec City, Canada and now living in Orange County, California, Joëlle is a palette knife painter, specializing in contemporary urban landscapes, coastal settings, and abstract pieces:  "My style, known as Urban Cubism™, combines bold colors and energetic compositions."

Does where you're from or where you currently live influence your work?

Absolutely, my Québécois roots heavily influenced my artistic style, and living in California has added new dimensions to my creativity. The natural beauty of California, especially the stunning sunsets, serves as a constant source of inspiration for me. Laguna Beach, in particular, has influenced my work, and I'm proud to exhibit my work here at The Signature Gallery.

What's your art background? Are you self-taught or did you study art?

I have no formal art education but have always been immersed in art. While I initially studied interior design, my true passion lies in being a self-taught artist, allowing me to develop my unique style known as Urban Cubism™.

Are you a full-time artist?

I am a full-time artist, and have the chance to work alongside my husband who is my studio manager. For the past 16 years, my career as an artist has occupied every aspect of my life, allowing me to dedicate myself to my art every day.

Describe the type of art you create.

I create vibrant and dynamic paintings, ranging from urban landscapes to abstract pieces. I let myself be inspired by my surroundings, and my style is characterized by bold colors and energetic compositions.

What do you love about the mediums that you use?

I primarily use acrylics, which I love for their versatility and fast drying time. I also enjoy experimenting with resin to add a glossy and durable finish to my paintings, enhancing their visual appeal and making the colors pop.

When did you discover resin? How has resin impacted your artwork?

I began experimenting with resin when I started creating art on metal 10 years ago. Today, I continue to explore resin as a medium for my metal pieces but continue to create work on canvas for a more organic feel.  Resin adds a unique depth and sheen to my paintings, enhancing their vibrancy, visual impact, and creating a unique and captivating finish.

Can you provide a brief rundown of your process?

My process begins with inspiration from my surroundings, followed by sketching and color selection. I then layer my paints using palette knives to create texture and depth. Finally, I may add a resin finish to enhance the vibrancy of the artwork.

Why do you want to make art? What motivates you to create?

Art is my passion, my way of expressing myself, and connecting with others. I love that my art serves as a conversation starter, sparking meaningful connections with others and igniting their imagination. It brings me joy to see how my work resonates with people and adds beauty to their lives.

Does art help you in other areas of your life?

Absolutely, art is not just a career for me; it's a way of life that brings fulfillment and purpose to everything I do. It allows me to express myself creatively and find beauty in the world around me.

What do you hope someone sees or feels when they look at your art?

I hope my art brings joy, inspiration, and a sense of wonder to those who view it.

How do you define success as an artist?

Success, for me, is measured by the impact my art has on others and the fulfillment I get from creating.

Where do you sell your work?

I primarily sell my work through galleries, as I believe it provides the best opportunity for people to view the pieces in person. However, I recently launched my new website where all my pieces can be viewed online, and my new “luxury prints” are available for direct purchase.
