Congratulations to artist Rebecca Anderson, our latest Instagram winner! Rebecca is a mixed media artist from Virginia Beach, VA who creates coastal inspired, three dimensional clay, glass and resin art: "I absolutely adore the media I work with. I just love the sparkle of the glass and the shine from the resin."
What’s your art background? Are you self taught or did you study art?
I've been creating for many years. I've taught myself with every medium.
Does where you’re from or where you currently live influence your work?
Where I live absolutely influences my work. I have always loved the water/beach. In fact, we live a block from the Chesapeake Bay.
When did you discover resin?
I started working with resin about six years ago.
How has resin impacted your artwork?
I used to do mosaics. I now use resin as my grout, basically. When I started working with resin, I had no idea so many people were using it. I needed to have my work stand out.
Why do you want to make art? What motivates you to create?
I love creating art! I love that it's my job! As far as motivation, I don't need any...….I love love doing it!
Can you provide a brief rundown of your process?
There have been many failures!!!! I don't use molds. I always tell people I dump my glass on the wood and with stiff paint brushes I start creating my design. You will find that my work is very three dimensional. Some pieces are a three to four part process. I like to experiment with resin and push its limits, like the mermaid tails. They are tricky: I start it flat and it's a waiting game until the resin sets at a certain point. I won't share what I do next...
What do you hope someone sees or feels when they look at your artwork?
Are you a full time artist or do you create around work hours?
I'm very lucky to say that I am a full time artist - in fact I just opened a studio with retail space.
